Three Days of Engendering the “Whats”
Imagine a play with actors lying on the grass in a park performing before a backdrop of spring green.
A parade of dancers in a shopping street with audiences invited to join.
As the performance starts, the atmosphere changes completely.
Strange Seed Shizuoka, a street theatre festival materializing such visions, was launched in 2016. As its title, Street Theatre Festival, denotes, it’s not an ordinary theatre festival—it is a festival that creates numerous questions of “What’s this? What’s that? What’s here?” in the city.
Encountering the “Whats”
A street theatre incorporates not only the cityscape but also everything around it—the sound, wind, and audience—into a performance. Your first impression might be that of “What’s this?” Raw artistic expressions once available only in theatres are now freed to the city, blurring the boundary between the performers and the audience and generating serendipitous experiences and encounters that converge everything around us. Strange Seed Shizuoka has been creating such “What’s this?” encounters.
Creating the “Whats”
You’re outside. You are free to laugh and dance however you please. This is an experiential festival where anyone filled with a curiosity to have fun is invited to join. You are welcome to watch performances, participate in fun workshops, and create the festival with us by applying for the open call program as a performer or to become a Watage-tai member, the festival’s volunteer staff: It is you who will shape the cityscapes of “What’s this? What’s that? What’s here?”
Fostering the “Whats”
Strange Seed Shizuoka marks its 10th anniversary. We have seen visitors from across Japan and abroad, and more past participants have been invited to perform at overseas festivals. As a unique festival unseen anywhere else in Japan, Strange Seed Shizuoka has closely worked with artists and performers who take on challenges in the world of street theatre. From Shizuoka to the world, it is our duty to introduce an international audience to performances further enhanced by the participating artists.
The first ten years and beyond. Through Street Theatre, we strive to create experiential festivals filled with curiosity, in which the exciting questions of “What’s this? What’s that? What’s here?” are born. Strange Seed Shizuoka 2025 now begins.
